£220k awarded to 21 Manchester projects cutting down waste

The Recycle for Greater Manchester Community Fund has awarded £220,000 in funding to 21 community groups across Greater Manchester who are working to cut waste and promote reuse and recycling.

The projects include schemes to reuse digital devices and tackle food waste.

The fund is now in its fourth year and uses proceeds from sales of preloved household items in “Renew Shops”.

These shops sell items which are collected at recycling centres across Greater Manchester, before being cleaned and repaired. They are then taken for resale in three Renew Shops located at centres in Oldham, Trafford and Salford, as well as through an eBay store and online shop.

The fund is managed by the Greater Manchester Environment Fund (GMEF), the UK’s first regional environmental impact fund.

Councillor Tom Ross, GMCA lead for the environment, waste and recycling, said: “I’m pleased to see the appetite for this funding is still strong and that we have been able to support another round of excellent projects.

“Greater Manchester is full of passionate and dedicated people who are inspiring their communities to take action to reuse, repair and recycle household waste. I look forward to seeing these projects progress and help us reach our sustainability goals.”

Cornish fishing net recycler hits £100k funding target

Cornwall-based Fishy Filaments has announced that it has surpassed its campaign funding target of £100,000 via Crowdcube.

The investment comes from over 215 individuals in 18 different countries.

The fishing net recycler uses technology which turns end-of-life fishing nets into materials for 3D printing and injection moulding.

Fishy Filaments said it hopes that it will see a further rise in investor interest following the announcement of its advanced program to produce the world’s first 100% recycled powder made specifically for SLS-type 3D printing. The startup worked with Alpha Powders to test the powder.
