Kirklees council imposes ban on commercial vehicles at recycling sites

In an attempt to put a stop to traders dumping waste illegally at the site, Kirklees council has imposed a ban on all commercial vehicles entering its household recycling centres without a permit.

The ban will be effective from November 1 2002 will also include hire vehicles and vehicles over 3.5 tonnes, with view to halting the admittance of commercial waste to all five of its recycling centres including: Emerald Street in Huddersfield; Bromley Farm in Upper Cumberworth, Bent Ley Road in Huddersfield, Nab Lane in Bristall and Thornhill Road in Dewsbury.

A council spokesperson said: “Residents pay for the provision and use of these sites through their council tax, but unfortunately some local traders are using the site for rubbish produced as part of their business activities and this is illegal. This means that their business is being subsidised by householders. This in turn reduces the amount of money available for the council to invest in much needed local services.”

Although concerns over illegal tipping have been expressed, the council says it is keen to prevent this. Anyone caught fly tipping can be fined up to 20,000, and for serious offences, says the council, imprisoned could be faced. The council has also put out a hotline number to report incidents of fly tipping.
