Waste disposal firm BCB Environmental has entered administration just three months after it pledged to appeal a decision blocking its proposal to build a £24 million waste-to-energy gasification facility in Tockwith.
BCB had been formed in 1998 as a specialist waste company, which handled both hazardous and non-hazardous material. Waste was collected and taken to its facility at Tockwith near York for processing.
The company had looked to develop its standing in the waste sector with a proposed £24 million waste-to-energy gasification facility, producing 10kWh of energy each year, at its site on Marston Business Park in Tockwith in 2007, but the planning application was refused by North Yorkshire county council.
The company revised the application in autumn 2008 but it was refused again. A third proposal was refused in December 2009 and, in April 2010, BCB announced that it intended to appeal the decision again (see letsrecycle.com story).
Earlier this month, the company was hit by a fire at its Tockwith site. According to the company, the fire, which broke out on August 11, destroyed its trading premises and posed an environmental risk to the surrounding areas.
The Environment Agency served an Anti Pollution Works Notice on the company on August 16, which required certain works to be undertaken to help safeguard the neighbouring Fleet Beck. At the time of the company entering administration this work was still ongoing in close liaison with the Environment Agency.
A spokeswoman for the company told letsrecycle.com that BCB would not comment on the issue.
The administration is being carried out jointly by P&A Partnership's Christopher White and John Russell, and the administrators are expected to issue a statement shortly.
