SAICA snaps up Futur to serve UK mill

By Steve Eminton

Competition for used cardboard in the UK domestic market looks set to intensify with SAICA strengthening its purchasing arm through the acquisition of Wiltshire-based recycling company Futur Ltd.

And, SAICA, which is a Spanish-owned business which includes recycling, paper production and waste management, has also revealed plans to enter the waste management sector in the UK.

The company's reason for buying Futur is to help secure cardboard tonnage as SAICA Paper is to open a 400,000 tonne per annum capacity boardmaking mill in Partington near Manchester next year and is running ahead of time in terms of construction and equipment installation. Recruitment for the mill is underway.

The Spanish company confirmed yesterday (November 8) that it had bought Futur and described the acquisition as the latest step in its strategy to become an integrated player in the UK.

SAICA already has UK operations with SAICA Pack UK and is also now looking at the waste management side as well. In a statement the company said that the Futur acquisition “opens the door to SAICA NATUR”  which is an integrated waste management business operating in Spain, Portugal and the south of France.

Commitment

A spokesman for SAICA said: “The move strengthens SAICA's long term commitment to its UK customers and highlights the key importance of the UK Market for the group.”

Futur was founded in 1994 as an independent recycling and waste management business based in Malmesbury, Wiltshire. Operating as a licensed waste broker, it provides a recycling and waste management service to a number of large volume producers throughout the UK such as IKEA and Poundland.

Simon Dymoke, Futur's managing director said: “There is a good fit with SAICA, both culturally and strategically. The team is looking forward to explaining the benefits to our customers both new and existing. SAICA has always been at the forefront of product innovation and as a strong family company, is able to take a longer-term view.”

Mr Dymoke added: “The Partington mill presents exciting opportunities for our customers to see their cardboard recycled in the UK and enjoy the benefits of lower waste miles, reduced carbon footprint and closed-loop recycling.”

The Futur business will remain at its Wiltshire base and SAICA will retain and extend the existing management team to head up its UK operations in paper recovery and integrated waste management.
