Speaking at the annual Zero Waste Awards ceremony in Warwickshire, Sue Armstrong-Brown, policy director at the Green Alliance, pointed to the “crucial need” to develop stronger resource efficiency messages for the future.
Tracing the development of waste management back over time, Mrs Armstrong Brown said that with the European Commission looking again at resource efficiency and circular economy measures, recycling and waste management is set to develop further.
She was speaking last week at the annual Zero Waste Awards presentation luncheon held at Coombe Abbey, Warwickshire where a range of businesses and local authorities were recognised for varying levels of zero waste achievement.
Winners
Praising the Zero Waste Award winners, she said: “I am impressed by the range of achievements and that businesses from such a range of sectors and sizes are here today.”
Chair of the judging panel, Sarahjane Widdowson of Ricardo AEA, who has judged the awards for several years, said that she was excited by the progress being made in industry. “Since I have been involved with the awards it is tremendous to see that companies have moved on from the early days with recycling being the highlight of their activities, through to full environmental practices and working towards resource efficiency and more circular approaches to businesses.”
Steve Eminton, editor of letsrecycle.com, said that he was delighted to see the depth of entries with a great focus on resource efficiency despite the fact that there was generally little political pressure for businesses to deliver on waste and recycling.
