WRAP invites compost managers to regional quality management courses

The Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP) has announced the dates of six regional training days aimed at helping compost managers to gain the BSI compost standard.

The Compost Quality Management Training Programme is targeted at compost site managers and operators, local authorities and compost site regulators. It will be run by WRAP with the help of the Chartered Institution of Wastes Management (CIWM).

WRAP said of the training scheme: “It is a key element in WRAP's Compost Standards Programme and will help waste management companies and local authorities seeking certification to the new BSI PAS 100.”

Delegates at the courses will be instructed on how to manufacture high quality products and develop good practice and given explanations and video demonstrations of monitoring procedures, end product testing, labelling and basic microbiology.

The dates of the regional training days are:

  • Wales: March 17, 2003
  • South west England: March 18, 2003
  • North of England: March 25, 2003
  • South east England: March 27, 2003
  • Scotland: April 10, 2003
  • Northern Ireland: April 11, 2003

Special projects manager Anne Riding said: “Implementing quality management systems at composting facilities is a crucial part of improving the consistency and quality of composted products. Running a well-managed site and monitoring and testing materials is vital to meeting the requirements of professional buyers and specifiers.”

Mike Philpott, chief executive of the CIWM, said: “Composting is a key process in meeting the government's waste strategy targets. It is essential that waste managers appreciate the factors involved in producing a marketable product that meets the new standards within BSI PAS 100.”

The training sessions follow the launch in November 2002 of the new BSI Publicly Available Specification for Composted Materials (PAS 100), which the government hopes compost manufacturers will use when selling their product as a stamp of quality.
