Worker dies at Lancashire recycling centre

Waste management company SITA UK has reported a fatality at one of its household waste recycling centres in Lancashire.

The company said 29 year old employee Martin Richardson “died in a tragic accident at our household waste recycling centre in Garstang, Lancashire”.

The incident, which occurred on Thursday, is thought to have involved a skip wagon on the site.

A statement from SITA UK said: “At this difficult time our thoughts are obviously with Martin's family, friends and work colleagues. Martin had worked for the company for two and a half years and was a well-liked and respected member of the team. Counselling has been offered to those within the team affected by yesterday's events.”

Operations at the site ceased and the site was closed while initial investigations were being carried out, the company said.

The incident comes just weeks after SITA UK suffered a fatality at another of its recycling sites, in Wiltshire (see letsrecycle.com story).

The company said: “SITA UK takes its health and safety obligations very seriously. The events leading up to yesterday’s incident are now a matter for investigation by ourselves and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE). Until this has been concluded we are unable to comment further.”
