Waste Recycling Group heads west and takes Wigan contract

Waste Recycling Group has been awarded a 10-year contract by Wigan Council to manage the household and municipal waste arising in the borough.

The contract is valued at more than 60 million and involves handling some 200,000 tonnes of waste annually for an initial period of 10 years with an opportunity to extend for a further 25 years. It is also seen as important to the group in moving out of its traditional base of Yorkshire – it has head offices in Doncaster – and the east of England into the North West.

John Huntington, WRG Managing Director, said: “We are delighted with this success. It confirms the group’s ability to secure large local authority contracts.”

The first phase of the contract is designed to meet statutory short and medium term recycling and recovery targets set by the Government this summer, by delivering an overall recovery rate of 40% through the provision of a central waste recycling and composting facility. If the council chooses to extend the contract into a second phase, higher recovery rates would be achieved through the development of further waste processing and treatment, to be determined by WRG and the Council in partnership.

The contract includes the acquisition for a nominal consideration of Landfill Management Limited – Wigan Council’s Local Authority Waste Disposal Company (LAWDC) – which operates the Kirkleds landfill site and manages five civic amenity sites in Orrell, Leigh, Ince and Wigan.

More than 55% of WRG’s business is secured by long term, local authority waste management contracts.
