Waste minimisation comes to the fore at WRAP

The Waste and Resources Action Programme has thrown the spotlight onto its waste minimisation programme with the appointment of a senior BSI figure as the director of the scheme.

Mark Barthel, who was previously head of environment, sustainability and corporate social responsibility for the BSI Group, has taken up the new post as director of waste minimisation.

Mr Barthel will be responsible for developing, implementing and monitoring WRAP's four waste minimisation initiatives in England. These are: the Home Composting Programme, Re-Useable Nappy Programme, Retailer Initiative and Waste Minimisation Innovation Fund.

”Waste minimisation is a challenging field“
Jennie Price, WRAP

WRAP chief executive Jennie Price said: “Waste minimisation is a challenging field and Mark's broad experience in the environmental sector will be extremely valuable, particularly his work with the UK's retail sector as a member of the Government's Advisory Committee on Consumer Products and the Environment.”

As director of waste minimisation, Mr Barthel will be charged with building high-level relationships with key stakeholders in local and national government and helping the private sector deliver the government's waste minimisation target of reducing the annual rate of increase in waste from 3% to 2% by the end of 2006.

In his previous post at BSI he was responsible for global environmental, sustainable development and corporate social responsibility issues in 114 countries and 200 offices.

In 2002/03, WRAP's waste minimisation programmes had a budget of 8 million in total: 6.6 million for home composting, 800,000 for the nappies initiative, 200,000 for the retailers initiative and 200,000 for the innovation fund.
