Located on Middlemore Lane in Aldridge, the new site expects to become operational in 2025, with full details on opening schedules to be announced.

Site facilities

The new HWRC featured an annual capacity of 40,000 tonnes across 19 bays, each housing two skips.

The adjoining WTS has been designed to accommodate up to 125,000 tonnes of collected municipal waste and recyclate per year.

Commenting on the new site, Councillor Adrian Andrew, Deputy Leader and Portfolio Holder for Economic Growth and Regeneration, said: “This project is a huge development for Walsall.

“What has been delivered here is truly a state-of-the-art facility, which will prove vital in ensuring we can continue to accommodate the waste demands we face in the Borough.”

The facility has also been equipped with weighbridges, service yards, ventilation systems and an office and welfare facilities for operational and management staff.

Walsall council invested in a £1 million complex odour control system within the project.

A dedicated reuse shop, including a workshop area, has also been incorporated into the site to allow residents to donate items for repair and resale.

Andrew added: “Our current facilities have served us well, but this project will accommodate our increasing demand and help us all to recycle and reuse more of our waste.”

Construction and delivery

Construction was delivered by Morgan Sindall Construction, who began work in April 2024.

Prior to the main construction phase, the team had to remove significant amounts of lying surface water and stabilise the site’s foundations using lime and cement soil engineering techniques.

Richard Fielding, Area Director for Morgan Sindall Construction in the Midlands, said: “It’s an incredible achievement to handover these key facilities to Walsall Council.

“At Morgan Sindall, sustainability is core to everything we do, so it makes us proud to deliver a project that will actively contribute to landfill diversion, increased recycling rates, and an overall cleaner borough for Walsall’s residents.”

Walsall will also be home to an Energy Recovery Facility (ERF), which operator Encyclis expects to be online in 2027.
