Ecogen Recycling in baler capacity boost
Ecogen Recycling Ltd has increased throughput of its Hampshire-based operations by installing a new automatic 50-tonne press force baler.
The machinery, supplied by Middleton Engineering, will allow Ecogen to process material faster and requires less manual intervention at its Alresford site.
The firm predominantly handles cardboard, plastics and paper, which is sent on to reprocessors in the UK or exported to Europe and China.
The installation will complement the firm’s existing manual fee semi-automatic closed-end baler now deployed full time at its archive paper shredding plant. Middleton has also provided Ecogen with a fully refurbished feed conveyor and loading hopper.
James Lewis, commercial director for Ecogen, said: “Despite challenging margins in the waste recycling sector, Ecogen has established itself as a profitable, multi-million pound business simply by offering a superior service, quicker payment terms and fairer material rebates to its customers.”
RVS rolls out RediTruck service
Remanufacturing specialist Refuse Vehicle Solutions Ltd (RVS) has announced its new RediTruck service, enabling operators to buy new waste vehicles from stock without waiting on long lead times.
The service allows customers to drive away a RediTruck with full commercial specification installed within days or weeks of placing an order.
Devon Contract Waste has become one of the first clients to use the service, ordering three new Mercedes Antos trucks with Dennis Olympus body, fitted with weighing prepared trade bin lifts.
Simon Almond, managing director of DCW, said the concept of RediTruck was ‘very appealing’ to operators who would ordinarily pay a premium to shorten lead times from manufacturers.
He said: “In our industry things move quickly. For example it might be a new customer or the fleet starts costing too much to repair so you need to refresh it quickly. New trucks that are ready in commercial spec. are very hard to find ‘off-the-shelf’ so RediTruck is very appealing for any operator.”
Spencer Law, RVS managing director, added: “We know our customers’ businesses and we know what kind of vehicles they need so we can do all of that for them. We can order the vehicles in advance and keep them in stock because we always have customers who will need them.”
Samson brings skip range to Scotland
Samson Containers has this month begun manufacturing its roll on roll off skip range in Melrose, Scotland.
The RORO and premium skip range builds on the firm’s growing portfolio, with bases in Preston, Blackpool, Buckingham, Boston, Nottingham, Rotherham and Hereford.
Samson now has almost 500 skips in production and 34 RORO units, which can be delivered to UK waste management firms within four weeks.
The emphasis on local manufacturing means that Samson can reduce the logistics costs for waste management companies, reduce its carbon footprint and keep haulage costs down.
Ross Simons, managing director, said: “We are very proud to launch our range of premium skips and ROROs in Scotland. It’s a market that deserves local manufacturing and I think our product offering there will be a success.”
Tana adds drum screen to portfolio
Tana has introduced a new ‘smart’ drum screen to its portfolio of compactors, shredders and chippers.
The drum screen has a simple structure that allows waste operators to refine recyclables via the separation of soil materials and waste fractions.
The screen includes conveyors can be driven separately and in both directions, a large screening area and a hydraulic system that senses the load.
It comes as part of the Finnish company’s ‘Smart Site’ technology roll out, a service concept that is based on intelligent technology and integrating physical machinery with networked sensors and software.
Hambleton awards 10-year fleet contract
Hambleton district council has awarded a 10-year contract to Specialist Fleet Services Ltd (SFS) to supply and maintain its refuse vehicles.
It is the third time Hambleton has renewed the contract with SFS – with an option to extend the arrangement for an additional 10 years.
The first batch of vehicles, five Dennis Eagle Twin Packs, will be delivered in February 2015 – with a combination of collection vehicles, sweepers, vans and a mobile crane to follow throughout the contract duration.
Hambleton covers around 40,000 households and has recently completed a review to help define its future waste strategy.
Paul Staines, head of environment service at Hambleton, said: “SFS has an excellent track record in helping us keep our waste and recycling fleet running smoothly. We are rolling out a new service and we are pleased that SFS will be managing our entire fleet including street cleansing and that this will facilitate a seamless transition.”
