Tyre Industry Council&#39s Responsible Recycler Scheme expands

The Tyre Industry Council's Responsible Recycler Scheme has expanded with two collection companies signing up as new members.

Essex-based Eastern Waste Disposal Ltd and Lancashire-based Leigh Tyres & Exhausts joined the scheme, which sets accountability and best practice standards for tyre collection and reprocessing.

Under the European Landfill Directive, there has been a ban on whole tyres going to landfill since July 2003. But, the recycling of tyres is becoming increasingly important as the industry prepares for a total ban on all tyres – whole or shredded – going to landfill from 2006.

” The Responsible Recycler Scheme is for everyone, large and small who can demonstrate compliance with its principles. “
– scheme secretary Peter Taylor

The Tyre Industry Council, a not-for-profit body funded by tyre manufacturers and the majority of UK tyre retailers, set up the Responsible Recyclers Scheme just over three years ago.

The scheme ensures its member companies, who are responsible for the majority of used tyre collections in the UK, re-use, recycle or dispose of scrap tyres in an environmentally responsible way. Since its formation, it has gained 18 collection and reprocessing companies as members.

Peter Taylor, the scheme secretary, welcomed the two new members of the scheme and said: “The TIC's Responsible Recycler Scheme is for everyone, large and small who can demonstrate compliance with its principles and satisfactorily fulfil its exacting audit standards for the benefits of the tyre consumer, the tyre trade itself and of course, our environment.”

More information on the Responsible Recycler Scheme is available at the Tyre Industry Council website.
