The 30,000 Waste Utilisation Development Programme will help the sector address regulations on the collection, transport, storage, handling, processing and use or disposal of animal by-products.
Under the Animal By-Products Regulations raw meat and fish cannot be sent to landfill, and from December cooked food from the retail sector is also subject to a landfill ban.

Seafish is offering grants for projects that look into commercially viable methods for using waste, disposing of waste and the cleaning shell waste.
Projects
Successful projects will be given up to 3,000 for a maximum of 12 months and must have a minimum of 50% match funding in cash or in kind. The closing date for applications is April 8 2005.

“We hope that these grants will help the industry to develop concepts and ideas that result in innovative new technologies, processes or ideas. Although principally aimed at members of the industry, applications are welcome from the academic community if they can demonstrate direct industry participation in the project,” he added.
