Tomras Titech technology uses a range of detection techniques including infrared, X-ray transmission, visual spectrometers, colour line cameras and metal sensors to separate materials. It is to be installed in six C&I MRFs including: Mid UK Recyclings plant in Caythorpe, Lincolnshire; Blakeleys Waste Management Ltds new plant in Wigan; and, Devon Contract Wastes plant in Exeter.

Commenting on the technology, Stephen Almond, sales engineer at Tomra Sorting UK, said: The processing of commercial waste is a massive growth area within the UK and its such an exciting time to be part of the latest developments in these new plants. Introducing advanced automated sorting systems for this complex material stream delivers clear commercial, legislative and environmental benefits and these new contracts demonstrate that UK recycling companies are recognising this.

SITA installs shredders at SRF plant

SITA UK has installed three high-specification UNTHA shredders at its Resource Recovery Centre in Birmingham which will help to produce up to 60,000 tonnes of solid recovered fuel (SRF) every year.

One shredder is an XR pre shredder and the other two are TR post shredders which will process commercial and industrial waste from the Midlands to produce cement grade SRF.

The shredders will operate in conjunction with trommels, air shifters, magnets and eddy current separators to ensure the specification is achieved. A near infrared (NIR) unit will be used to measure output quality and ensure the SRF has the correct chlorine, moisture content and calorific value.

Tim Hughes, strategic development manager for SITA UK, said: The new plant enables us to offer our customers with a recycling solution which is cost effective and avoids the use of landfill. Its also great to see that the SRF we will be producing will stay and be put to good use in the Midlands area.

Delivered by Exeter-based Denbow International on a four year contract, the Kramer loader is now part of a five machine fleet at Tilbury. The fleet is currently working two shifts from 6am to 11pm, five days a week and is handling a total 1000 tonnes of waste every week. The four wheel steer, four wheel drive Kramer loader is powered by a Deutz turbocharged and intercooled diesel engine developing 88 kW (120 hp) and offers a maximum payload of 4500kg.

Tahar Trabelsi, operations manager at Tilbury, said: The 880 has slotted-in very well to the operation and is performing beyond our expectations and easily keeping pace with the rate at which we need it to feed the baler plant to meet our high level of activity.

The plant was launched by its Finnish supplier REMU at construction trade fair Bauma 2013 in Munich, Germany. The re-engineered machine has a 2.6m feeder unit and the blade spacing can be set to between 15mm and 100mm, depending on the configuration of the screening element. Grain size of screened material is approximately 8mm smaller than the blade spacing.

The screening plant is powered by an 82 HP (61 kW) CAT C4.4 engine and uses wear resistant steel blades to process material. Worsley Plant said a large engine bay and double doors give users easy access to the plants service points.

UNTHA launches finance division

Waste shredding machinery provider UNTHA UK has launched a new finance division which will allow companies to gain access to equipment through leasing or hire purchase deals.

UNTHA Finance is an asset-based lending provision which the firm said is designed to make waste machinery accessible to all organisations. It is hoped the new service will alleviate some of the financial constraints currently faced by firms looking to improve their efficiencies or expand their operations. It comprises of packages including shredder leasing and hire purchase and UNTHA said it is available to any organisation for any machine from its fleet.

Chris Oldfield, UNTHA UK managing director, explained: As the economy continues to recover from the recession, many businesses are finding it hard to raise the capital to purchase a shredder outright, whilst other organisations quite rightly want to protect their cash flow. However with Government funding notoriously complicated and many financial institutions still reluctant to lend, this can leave companies with very few investment alternatives. It is perhaps even harder for new start-ups or companies that dont have a particularly strong balance sheet. So rather than simply watching these struggles take place, weve actually taken action.
