MRF opened to help Merthyr Tydfil meet recycling targets

Recycling engineers Middleton Engineering have completed a new materials recycling facility (MRF) for Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council designed to support the council’s new kerbside recycling strategy.

The facility built at the council’s site in Pentrebach, can handle 1,000kg of mixed household plastics and metal waste per hour and incorporates a series of bespoke feed conveyors including an in-floor section to facilitate loading.

The new kerbside recycling strategy has seen Merthyr Tydfil council change from having commingled collections to a multi-stream recycling collection system using one-pass vehicles from Romaquip.

Recyclable materials including plastic containers and cans, paper, cardboard and glass and food are sorted separately before being transported to Pentrebach for sorting.

Mark Smith, engineering director at Middleton Engineering said: “Taking on board the council’s requirements, we provided a solution that focuses on minimizing vehicle movements, to produce an efficient separation and baling system within quite a small footprint”.

In addition to supporting the council’s new strategy, the MRF is part of a wider plan for Welsh council’s obligation to meet a 58% recycling target by 2015/16.

Vehicle tracking keeps container handler on time

Container and unaccompanied trailer handler, Assured Container Services (ACS), has completed its first six months with vehicle solution provider, Verilocation’s tracking system.

ACS collects from all major ports including Tilbury, Purfleet and Thames port and delivesr to any destination in the UK. The company has said that the tracking system has become “an integral part of the business”.

Using iPads and Verilocation’s bespoke mobile app, ACS is able to track the location of each vehicle at all times, which enables them to deal with delays and to keep customers informed on arrival times.

Director Paul Asbury said: “By keeping an eye on the real-time tracking application, we not only can coordinate operations remotely but also we don’t need to maintain verbal contact with the drivers. This has saved us time and money by eliminating around 30 calls a day. Also, when the drivers are on long journeys and possibly on their rest period, we don’t need to disturb them to find out where they are.”

Terex|Finlay adds the C-1554 to its range of cone crushers

Terex|Finlay has launched its C-1554 tracked mobile cone crusher, the latest addition to its range of cone crushers.

The mobile solution provides large reduction ratios and cubical shape in the surface ore mining and aggregate industries.

Incorporating the Terex MVP450x cone crusher, the company states the new machine can accept an all in feed and features direct variable speed clutch drive and hydraulic closed side setting (CSS) adjustment.

In addition, the hopper/feeder on the plant features an automated metal detection and a purge system designed to protect the cone and reduce downtime by removing metal contaminants via the purge chute.

Alan Witherow, Terex|Finlay product development manager, said: “The increased productivity, functionality and serviceability of the MVP450x chamber has consistently impressed operators of the machine during testing. The results have been will ultimately deliver significant revenue streams and profitability for our customers.”

Metal separation systems provider, Bunting Magnetic Europe worked with operator HPR Stoke who provide recycled plastics in a variety of formats including bales, shred, regrind, agglomerate and compound.

HPR’S plant has an output of around 35,000 tonnes per year with the new solution, a twin-pole overband cross magnetic separator, which produces strong magnetic fields, increasing the level of ferrous metal separation.

Roger Evans, HPR Stoke’s technical director explained the reasoning behind purchasing the Bunting magnet and said: “Bunting was able to manufacture a bespoke solution based on their experience of the application rather than simply provide an ‘off the shelf’ solution.”
