Perth and Kinross step-up garden waste kerbside collections

Seventy per cent of households in Perth and Kinross are to be given a garden waste collection service after a council survey of residents.

This month, the council has started rolling out an additional 16,000 garden waste bins after 6 out of 10 households in the area said they wanted to recycle garden waste. As well as garden waste, the bins will take uncooked fruit and vegetable waste.

This allocation adds to the existing service which provides 7,500 households with a garden waste collection. The service has been running since 1999 but is now stepping up a gear with support from Waste and Resources Action Programme and the Scottish Waste Awareness Group.

“This roll out of brown lidded garden waste bins gives householders in Perth and the main settlements along the Carse of Gowrie the opportunity to recycle their garden waste,” said John Milne, executive director of Environment Services at the council, adding: “The benefit to us all is a reduction in the use of landfill and conservation of the earth's natural resources.”

So far 11,000 extra bins have been issued in Perth and Kinross and main settlements along the Carse of Gowrie, along with a promotion scheme for home composting and a dedicated composting advisor.

Households were sent an A5 flyer with information of the scheme and have been asked to phone the helpline if they do not want a bin.

The service will run on alternate weeks in the summer and once a month in the winter, with waste being taken to a central SITA composting site – Binn Landfill, Glenfarg and composted in open windrows.

The site produces around 8,000 tonnes of compost a year and is used in local landscaping and council projects. People living outside of the current collection area are able to take their green waste to one of the 8 local recycling centres within the council's area.
