The incident, described as a “road traffic collission” by the London Ambulance Service, occurred shortly before 11am on Wednesday (11 July) in the Sanderstead area of Croydon.
The man, who is understood to be a member of the public in his 60s, died at the scene.
Veolia
When contacted by lestrecycle.com, a spokesperson for Veolia confirmed that one of its collection vehicles was involved in a “serious incident” in which “tragically a man has died”.
“Our deepest sympathy is with the family of the deceased and while we are unable to comment further on the circumstances at present, we are working closely with the emergency services and a full investigation into the incident is underway,” the spokesperson said.
London Ambulance Service confirmed that an incident response officer, two single responders in cars and an ambulance crew were sent to the scene. A London Air Ambulance helicopter was also despatched.
Pedestrian
A London Ambulance Service spokesperson said it was called to Cherry Tree Green, South Croydon, to “reports of a road traffic collision involving a pedestrian”.
“Sadly despite extensive efforts they died at the scene.”
Veolia has a 15-year contract with Croydon council for waste and recycling collections which began in 2003.
A council spokesman said: “We were saddened to hear of the death of a pedestrian in south Croydon on Wednesday 11 July and our sympathies are with his family.”
Met Police said: “The refuse truck stopped at the scene. There have been no arrests.”
The man is yet to be formerly identified, Met Police confirmed.
