NISP and Brew Centre join forces

Two government networks aimed at helping businesses and the public sector improve their waste management and recycling performance have announced plans to work more closely together.

We will keep providing services to local businesses and our customers will not see anything different. If anything, they will hopefully see better service

NISP – a body which develops sustainable resource management in business – has joined forces with the Business Resources Efficiency and Waste (BREW) Centre for Local Authorities.

The BREW Centre for Local Authorities, which is entering its third year of operation, offers support to councils on improving their service to local businesses, waste reduction, diverting waste from landfill and saving money.

The BREW Centre has achieved considerable results in recycling over the previous two years having diverted 74,000 tonnes of material away from landfill and saved businesses over £9.4m.

Over the coming five years they project these figures to rise to 385,000 tonnes of material diverted from landfills and £47m in savings for small businesses.

Consortium

At present, the BREW Centre is part of a consortium involving Local Government Associations, Oxfordshire County Council and NISP.

The planned move towards greater association with NISP and, the company behind NISP, International Synergies Ltd (ISL) will lead to businesses and councils working more closely together to improve their recycling performance.

Sue Kent, BREW Centre manager said: “The BREW Centre will continue to be an entity in its own right. NISP are keen on seeing synergy in business and there is no greater example than the joining of private and public.”

NISP uses a resource management system to monitor material and resource streams of its 10,000 members and identifies links between them so previously unused or discarded resources of one member are recovered and reused by another.

“We will keep providing services to local businesses and our customers will not see anything different. If anything, they will hopefully see better service,” added Ms. Kent.
