Waste management systems manufacturer FAUN Zoeller, has unveiled two new refuse collection vehicles specifically for the UK market the Narrowpress and the Mini Selectapress.

The vehicles were officially launched at the companys Innovation Days tour in May 2012, which showcased the companys range of vehicles.

The Narrowpress is a rear-loading RCV and is only 2.3 metres wide as opposed to the standard width 2.5 metre vehicles. The company says it has been specifically designed for local authorities working within inner cities to allow greater manoeuvrability in tight spaces.

The Mini Selectapress has also been designed for inner city operations, the vehicle allows two different waste types to be collected at the same time as the body is divided along its length into two compartments either on a 70/30 or 50/50 split.

Nick Preston, commercial and marketing director from FAUN Zoeller said: The Innovation Days gave us an opportunity to get face-to-face with clients from local authorities and private waste management companies and demonstrate what our equipment is really capable of.

Inner city collection rounds can be tricky for larger vehicles to cope with. To address this we are continuously strengthening our product range and have designed this new group of vehicles to give our clients more control and better manoeuvrability.

Avery Weigh-Tronix launches first of its kind scale

Global weighing equipment manufactuer, Avery Weigh-Tronix, has launched its ZM weighing indicator series, which it claims is the first in the scale industry to use the highly visible display screen technology to make operations simpler and more accurate.

One of the indicator models, the ZM303 series, offers a TN LCD display that has dark digits against a green, backlit lighter background to help reduce operator fatigue.

For harsh operating environments or for heavy washdown environments the indicators can be supplied in an IP69K rated stainless steel enclosure. These enclosures feature Gore-vent technology, a membrane that allows the indicator to breath without sacrificing its IP69K rating.

According to Avery Weigh-Tronix this overcomes the problem of trapped moisture inside the indicator, which is caused by the expansion and contraction of gases due to temperature changes. Other enclosures include a protective aluminium option or a stainless steel panel mount version for control room applications.

Don Halbert, product manager for Avery Weigh-Tronix, said: We have designed these indicators to meet the practical needs of industry. They are robust and durable but also help to solve a common issue of poor visibility leading to operator error.

Air compressor helps MRF meet zero waste target

Staffordshire based waste management firm Briers Recycling has installed a CompAir L75RS air compressor at its Tamworth materials recovery facility (MRF) to help it meet its zero waste to landfill policy.

The compressor is used to provide air to the companys recently-installed Near Infrared (NIR) auto-sorter machine. 120 air nozzles eject specified materials by using the latest infrared technology.

Simon Rooke, operations manager for Briers said: It was a considerable capital outlay to purchase the new NIR technology so we knew that installing a reliable and cost-effective compressor was vital to help protect our investment.

The NIR auto-sorter analyses the waste using a spectrometer. The required materials spectrum of colours is programed into the system and then a light is shone onto the conveyer belt. The light reflected back from the refuse is then analysed, enabling the system to identify the material type and eject it via the air nozzles. This allows us to select what kind of material we want to retrieve, and even the specific colour.

CompAir provided a regulated speed compressor, which automatically increases or decreases air supply according to site requirements. This helps to save energy by allowing the company to tailor its air usage so that the compressor only consumes the precise amount of energy required by the process.

New metal detector protects plastics production

Sorting machinery specialist S+S Inspection has designed a piece of equipment it claims can protect plastic extrusion, injection and blow moulding apparatus from metal contaminants.

The Protector-MF has been designed specifically to detect the smallest particles of both magnetic and non-magnetic contamination. The detector can be mounted directly above the material infeed point, to prevent contamination of feedstock after separation.

The PROTECTOR-MF has been designed for slow moving columns of infeed material, is available to fit standard 70, 100,120 and 150 mm feed pipes. This complements the size ranges of the smaller PROTECTOR units and caters for higher infeed flows. The robust, compact aluminium-block design allows heavy conveyor, mixing and dosing equipment to be fixed directly to the unit.

Portable gas analysis technology company Geotech has announced that it will be displaying its Biogas 5000 portable analyser at the ADBA show in Birmingham on July 4-5.

According to Geotech AD plant biogas leaks can be easily detected using its TDL-500 laser gas leak detector, which has almost instant sensitivity to CH4 at 1 ppm.

The company claims that the kit is accurate to +/-0.5% for methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2), and readings are repeatable for identification of changes in gas mix. Raw hydrogen sulphide (H2S) can be measured up to 10,000 ppm with the same sensor as low-H2S de-sulphurised biogas.
