Lampton Services celebrates commercial waste anniversary

Lampton Services, a company wholly owned by Hounslow council, is marking the first anniversary of its commercial recycling and waste collection service

The commercial recycling and waste collection service offered by Lampton Services provides a range of flexible solutions to businesses in Hounslow, including food waste collection, cardboard recycling, glass recycling, general waste collection, and waste compaction. By utilising these specialist recycling functions, businesses can significantly reduce their environmental impact.

Lampton Services ceases to use diesel for its fleet

Since its launch in July 2022, the service has diverted over 360 tonnes of waste from landfill, with the number of commercial customers increasing “more than twenty-fold”.

As part of its anniversary celebrations the company has transitioned its collection truck from diesel to HVO fuel, a net-zero carbon fuel derived from waste cooking oils and fats. This transition enables the service to achieve 90% carbon savings, contributing to reduced air pollution and providing a greener waste management option to its customers.

Martin Cresswell, chair of the Lampton Group said: “As we celebrate the first anniversary of our Commercial Recycling and Waste Collection service, there are some really exciting milestones to reflect on. From surpassing 100 collection points to the recent introduction of HVO fuel, it’s been a busy and successful first year.

“Our priority is to continue growing and improving our service, supporting local businesses with their waste and recycling needs for a cleaner, greener borough. We are proud to be delivering carbon savings and reducing the amount of waste going to landfill as we support our customers on their sustainability journeys. In its first year, Lampton Services Commercial Recycling and Waste Collection service has been praised for its reliable and efficient service to customers.”

‘Big increase’ in carpet diversion from landfill

Carpet Recycling UK has reported a “large increase” in the amount of carpet and textile flooring waste being diverted from landfill in 2021, with 82% of the 462,000 tonnes of waste generated that year “finding alternative reuse, recycling, treatment and disposal routes”.

The association reported a ‘large increase’ in the amount of carpets diverted from landfill

Commenting on the latest figures released at the association’s Annual Conference and Awards event held in June, Adnan Zeb-Khan, scheme manager said: “This percentage increase is reflecting the final effects of the pandemic when most of the waste captured by the waste management sector was sent to energy from waste facilities.”

Mr Zeb-Khan also emphasised the need for the industry to take action to develop and lead its own Extended Producer Responsibility legislative framework.

He said: “We are leading this strategy with the development of four key working groups with their core members to address key areas such as data management, take-back scheme, sustainability pledge and EPR based policy. These key areas will allow us to develop a road map of favourable and workable policies for the sector.”

Veolia celebrates London Pride

Veolia has unveiled details of its participation in London’s Pride parade.

Over seventy colleagues from across the country joined together to march in support of the LGBTQIA+ community.

Accompanying the Veolia team in the parade was their electric refuse collection fleet, adorned with vibrant footprints representing the LGBTQIA+ progress Pride flag. These footprints symbolise the individuals at the heart of Veolia’s 2023 Pride campaign, emphasizing solidarity and support.

After the celebrations concluded, Veolia Westminster and their rainbow-colored fleet took to the streets to collect waste from the event. The collection vehicles display their Pride flags throughout the year as they continue their vital work in cleaning up Westminster.

SATCol launches new data wiping and reuse programme

SATCoL’s (The Salvation Army trading arm) has unveiled  free, police and government-approved data wiping and reuse service.

Donated equipment is distributed to SATCoL’s 240 retail outlets

This initiative intends to save companies money while giving a fresh lease of life to unwanted IT equipment such as laptops, PCs, phones, and tablets.

By securely destroying all the data on these devices, SATCoL provides a secure disposal solution while also repurposing the equipment for resale. Donated IT equipment is distributed to SATCoL’s 240 retail outlets and sold through a dedicated e-commerce platform. This ensures that the donated equipment becomes accessible to individuals who may not be able to afford or access such devices, with the funds raised being directed to The Salvation Army’s charitable endeavours.

SATCoL employs sophisticated software that adheres to various data destruction standards, including the UK Police standard HMG Infosec Standard 5, certified by the National Cyber Security Centre. This ensures that all data is thoroughly removed according to UK standards, as well as complying with relevant world standards, including those in the US and Europe.

The data wiping and reuse service provided by SATCoL is fully funded by the organisation, offering a cost-effective alternative for businesses that currently pay for separate data destruction services.
