Lincolnshire waste facility opens doors
Members of the public were recently invited on an educational tour of Lincolnshire’s energy from waste facility.
FCC Environment and Lincolnshire county council welcomed 400 visitors to the site. People got to visit the control room and learn hands-on about waste and recycling through interactive exhibits.

Since it was opened in 2013, the plant has contributed to a reduction in the amount of waste Lincolnshire residents send to landfill.
The plant has the capacity to treat 170,000 tonnes of commercial and municipal waste at the facility per year.
Juergen Schaper, general manager at the plant, said: “This was an exciting day for us, mainly because the communities we serve at the heart of our business. Since we officially opened in 2013 we have revolutionised the way people think about their waste, working closely with Lincolnshire county council to deliver a facility that will continue to serve homes and business for years to come.”
Councillor Reg Shore, lead for waste and recycling at Lincolnshire county council said it was an important learning experience for young people.

UK skip-hire comparison service launched
SkipScanner has launched an online skip-hire price comparison service.
The Dublin-based software developer claims the tool will enable consumers to compare prices and place an order via a single application.
Customers are required to simply enter their postcode, size of skip required and the dates for which it is needed.
The service will initially be available in London, Birmingham and Manchester.
Morgan Lynch, SkipScanner director, said: “People simply don’t have the time to call around three or four different companies to get quotes, and to be honest with the technology we have today, there is no reason why they should have to.
“SkipScanner customers can review the market and complete their order in well under five minutes ensuring they receive the right service at the right price. All the operators on the site are fully licensed and our rating system enables customers to provide feedback to help inform future users.”

Ecosurety purchases BMW i3 electric car
Bristol-based environmental compliance firm Ecosurety has revealed it is investing in alternative forms of transport.
The resource efficiency specialist has purchased a zero-emissions vehicle, the BMW i3. It has also built an electric car charge point at its offices.
James Piper, Ecosurety commercial director, said: “Our people cover the length and breadth of the country and this new vehicle means we can visit our members and contacts in the most sustainable way possible, without having to resort to standard fuel vehicles.
“We are serious about continuously reducing our impact on the environment, just as we encourage our members to do.
“Large numbers of electric charge points are being created around the country, leading me to believe electric vehicles will be the default transport of the future.”
Mr Piper was the first person to try the car on a long distance trip to Leeds.
He said employees are encouraged to take public transport whenever possible.

Merseyside groups receive community grant
Ten groups in Merseyside and Halton have received a £110,000 grant aimed at making the region a cleaner and greener place.
The cash is being provided by the Merseyside Recycling and Waste Authority and Veolia community fund, which has run annually since 2006.
Community cash has been awarded to groups committed to making Mereyside a greener place
The fund include the repair and re-use of unused furniture, cookery clubs to help reduce food waste, a scheme to increase recycling within Liverpool’s Roma community, large-scale artwork in the city centre, and unwanted wood and timber waste re-use at a local farm.
Councillor Graham Morgan, chairperson of the Recycling and Waste Authority, said: “We’ve this made this money available for projects that can have an impact on their local community and make Merseyside and Halton a cleaner and greener place for us all to live and work.
“Giving groups the opportunity to get involved in looking after their environment can only bring benefits to all and can help us appreciate items as valuable resources rather than something which otherwise might be just thrown away.”
Successful applicants have been awarded £25,000 for schemes, which operate across Merseyside and Halton, and up to £8,000 for projects working at a local authority level only.

Potters Group completes move to new HQ
Welshpool-based Potters Group has completed its move into its new headquarters.
The firm has added the adjoining 5.5 acres of the former Floform factory site on Henfaes Lane to its 7.5 acres at Potters Yard.
The company said it has outgrown its previous headquarters at Potter’s Yard after recruiting 15 new members of staff over 12 months.
However, Potter’s Yard will remain home to the waste transfer station, scrap yard and adjoining community recycling centre.
James Potter, Potter Group managing director, said: “We bought the site from a London based investment company because it perfectly suited our needs for the development of the Potter’s Yard base.
“The move will allow us to develop the present base into a state-of-the-art facility to help us deliver sustainable waste management services and offer total waste management solutions for years to come.
“Customers should not be affected other than needing to use the Henfaes Lane entrance in future and its business as usual.”
