Navy brought in to tackle fire at paper recycling plant

A Royal Navy ship has come to the aid of the fire brigade in dealing with a fire at a paper recycling plant in Kent.

HMS Leeds Castle was used to supply water to fire fighters that were dealing with a blaze at Nordic Recycling's plant at the Chatham Docks in Gillingham last night.

The company specialises in waste collection and processing. It exports materials to Europe, Scandanavia and the Far East and the site processes around 6,000 tonnes of paper a week.

A call was made to the fire brigade at 5.46pm on Tuesday 19 July. At one point there were eight fire appliances on site alongside one water management unit. By 9pm hours last night the fire had subsided and there were just three vehicles on site.

According to the fire services, around 2,000 tonnes of paper was thought to have been involved in the fire. Three private vehicles and two arctic lorries were also involved. Forklift trucks were used to move untouched paper bails away from the fire.

A spokeswoman for the fire brigade said: “Fire fighters are still on site damping down the fire at this moment, they are expected to be there for the rest of the day. Once safe an investigation will be carried out into the fire.”

A spokeswoman for Nordic Recycling said that the company is not commenting on the fire at this point.
