Liverpool to run prize draws as recycling incentive

Liverpool city council is launching a prize draw incentive scheme to encourage householders to recycle their waste.

Every resident using the city council's kerbside recycling service will be entered into the draw for the chance to receive 100 each week. The first draw takes place next month.

Liverpool's kerbside scheme allows householders to recycle paper, glass and cans every fortnight using purple bags and boxes.

Under the new incentive scheme, recycling staff will record address details for households taking part in the kerbside recycling service for entry into the draw. The council said that at the end of every week a lucky winner would be picked out of a “recycled hat”.

Recycling buzz

Liverpool's executive member for green issues, Councillor Richard Oglethorpe, said: “We want to give every resident the recycling buzz and get them recycling. What better incentive to reward people than with a cash prize? A fist full of money will be given away every week. All residents have to do is make sure they put out their recyclable items for collection every fortnight.

“The city council is committed to making Liverpool a cleaner, greener city and the prize draw is just one of many new initiatives to get even more people recycling,” Cllr Oglethorpe added.

Incentive schemes are being used by an increasing number of local authorities to encourage householders to recycle their waste. This autumn will see a number of councils in England trialling incentive schemes of various types under a 5 million programme run by Defra (see letsrecycle.com story).

Liverpool recycled 10% of household waste in 2003/04, but must reach an 18% target by the end of this financial year to meet with government recycling targets.
