The deal will see Geminor export around 100,000 tonnes of grade A2 waste wood produced at Vestforbrænding to markets in Sweden and Latvia, where it will be utilised in the production of furniture.
The four-year contract was won through an official tender process and the first export will commence in October 2019. The value of the contract was not disclosed but was first valued at around £2.3 million, valuing the waste wood at around £5.75 a tonne.
Vestforbrænding is Denmark’s largest waste recovery company, owned by 19 regional municipalities surrounding Copenhagen. The company offers solutions within the collection and treatment of waste, and the supply of district heating and electricity.
Milestone
Commenting on the partnership, country manager for Geminor in Denmark, Kasper Houmark Thomsen, said: “Securing this contract in the Danish waste market is a very satisfying milestone for Geminor. This is an important and natural step for us, since we want to be able to work both up- and downstream as a full-scale provider of services.”
The move comes amid other expansions being undertaken by Geminor, which has logistic hubs and offices in Scandinavia, Finland, UK Germany and Poland.
In March 2019, the company announced that it had acquired Norwegian biofuel producer Bøn Biobrensel AS, which, according to Geminor, “strengthens its position in the Nordic secondary fuels market”.
Geminor also last month signed a contract to handle “the first ever export of treated waste” from Iceland, which saw RDF transported from the Netherlands to Iceland.
