The green waste recycling service will be available to 55,000 households in Gateshead, with a green wheeled bin collected fortnightly.

The roll out will occur over three stages with the first stage in February of this year. All residents of Gateshead with sufficient size gardens will have received a bin by the middle of May.
Gateshead council was one of 51 successful projects in the UK awarded 1.5 million from the National Waste Minimisation Recycling Challenge Fund that helps local authorities recycle waste.
Targets
Councillor Michael McNestry, cabinet member responsible for the local environment at Gateshead council launched the service. Mr McNestry explained: “This year we have set a target to recycle 18% of all domestic waste. Recycling our garden waste will make contribution to meeting these targets and separating green waste at home will speed up the process.”
“This is a timely launch which supports the national campaign “Recycle Now”, encouraging residents to take responsibility for their own recyclable waste and Green-it staff will be taking a road-show around the borough in April to explain how it works,” he added.

Gateshead has already been running a “kerb-it”, kerbside recycling scheme which enables residents to recycle cans and paper. The council has said that the collection of garden waste is ital for it to divert waste from landfill and protect the future of the environment.
