The purchase of the Sunderland Metal Company means that Warrington-based EMR now has seven sites in the North East, including depots in Hartlepool, Blaydon, Tyne Dock, Middlesbrough and Marske.
The new site, which is near the centre of the city in Pallion, contains a shear, a fleet of vehicles and an authorised treatment facility. Twelve members of staff work on the site and all have been retained by EMR. The company said it would not divulge the cost of the purchase for reasons of commercial confidentiality.
Mike Seale, regional director of EMR, said: “We are delighted to have acquired such a well established company in Sunderland. The new site will complement our existing operations in the North East and give us the opportunity to expand our processing activities in an area where we have focused largely on shipping in the past.”

EMR is one of the largest metal recycling companies in the world with over 100 sites.
Sunderland Metal Company will continue to operate as normal under the new ownership, accepting all grades of ferrous and non ferrous metal, including End-of-Life vehicles.
