Specialising in the reprocessing of IT equipment through refurbishment, re-use and recycling, the company is aiming to increase its waste electrical and electronic equipment reprocessing capacity ahead of new regulations set to take effect in 2006.
The Bracknell-based company already has one plant in Hertfordshire and has plans for two more plants, including one in the Czech Republic.
Peter Palmer, the company's director of communications, said: “The plant in the Czech Republic will be used for reprocessing IT equipment, it will follow the same process that is already carried out at our existing plant in Rushden, Northamptonshire.”
Mr Palmer said that CKS Recycled Technology hopes to have the Czech plant up and running by early 2006.
Wales
Alongside the Czech development, CKS is currently assessing premises in Wales to house a WEEE recycling plant and hard disk shredding facility.
The Welsh facility is to take brown goods such as entertainment devices, IT and telecommunications equipment that cannot be re-used and disassemble them for further recycling. Mr Palmer said: “We are planning to open the WEEE facility in late 2005 with an initial capacity of 250 tonnes per week, rising to over 500 tonnes in the foreseeable future.”
Before the recycling phase, CKS Recycled Technology sends reusable computers that are not suitable for the UK market to developing countries. The company currently has major projects in Romania and Ghana.
In Ghana CKS Recycled Technology works with the Institute of Computer Technology, which was established in 1998 to offer Ghanaian children an opportunity to learn IT skills.
