Elderly woman dies in collision with Biffa waste truck

An inquest has been opened and adjourned into the death of an elderly woman who was killed in a collision with a Biffa Waste Services refuse collection truck.

The victim, aged 82, was believed to have been trying to cross the road in Wimborne Square, Wimborne, Dorset, when the incident occurred on August 30, around 1.15pm.

Police have confirmed that Betty Hunt, also from Wimborne, died at the scene of the collision. Biffa's red and white Volvo refuse truck, which was involved, had been on a trade waste collection round.

An inquest has been opened and adjourned, and police are continuing to investigate after several witnesses came forward. No-one has been arrested.

Local newspaper The Dorset Echo reports that the woman was trying to cross the road with a walking stick and that a witness heard a nearby bus driver hoot his horn just moments before the collision took place.

A police spokesman at the scene of the incident told the newspaper that the pedestrian had “come into contact with a slow moving dustbin truck”.

Biffa Waste Services spokesman Barry Walton said: “This is a tragic and deeply regrettable incident and our thoughts are with the friends and family of the deceased at this very difficult time.

“In the meantime, we are doing everything we can to investigate this terrible event and are assisting the authorities with their inquiry.”
