Cumbria waste contract down to final three bidders

Cumbria county council has shortlisted three companies for its long-term waste management contract.

Cumbria has been tendering for a company to take over waste management services from council-owned Cumbria Waste Management in the beginning of the next financial year. The winning bidder will be expected to meet the governments recycling and landfill targets as well as working towards the Cumbria Waste Strategy.

Following over a year of analysis of bids, Cumbria is now down to the final three companies – Onyx Environmental, Shanks Group and Waste Recycling Group. A decision is expected in the coming months on a preferred bidder.

Once the preferred bidder is selected the council will begin negotiating with the company in order to have a contract ready to start early next year.

Value
The initial value of the contract is initially expected to be 17 million per year rising to 49 million in 2031.

As part of the waste management contract, which will run for 25 years, the winning bidder will be purchasing the councils waste management company Cumbria Waste Management (see letsrecycle.com story).
