The company said that as of February 4, 2008, it will pay £125 per tonne for steel cans delivered, an increase of £35 per tonne from the January 2008 price.
The price rise comes on the back of a significant increase in the global price of steel driven by strong demand within India.
Corus said the price increase “reflects the achievement of the CanRoute system”, which it said had a record year in 2007.
CanRoute
There are 14 of the CanRoute sites around the UK. These include European Metal Recycling sites in Bradford, Canning Town, Rochdale, Sheffield, Southampton, Swindon and Warley as well as SimsMetal sites in Derby, Newport and Nottingham.
The CanRoute network of sites also includes the Seaforde Scrap Metals site in Northern Ireland and the John R Adam Ltd site in Glasgow.
The system was set up to provide steel collectors including local authorities, waste management and collection companies with regional sites to drop off steel cans more locally. It also offers prompt payment for steel cans, which can be supplied loose, flattened or lightly baled.
The companies that have sites accredited as CanRoute centres receive, quality check, store and bale steel cans before delivering them to Corus in the correct form for them to be recycled at one of Corus' steel reprocessing sites.
Since it started in June 1999, the CanRoute network has collected over 100,000 tonnes of domestic steel packaging for recycling – the equivalent of 2.5 billion cans.
