Under the deal, which commences in July 2015, Cawleys will collect around 8,000 tonnes per year of waste and recycling from Canary Wharf Management Ltd and its commercial tenants on the 97-acre estate, which includes London’s second tallest building, One Canada Square.
Based in Luton, Cawleys also processes waste and recycling from the Westfield Shopping Centre in Stratford, East London, as well as supermarket Waitrose’s 299 UK branches.
Material collected by Cawleys will be sent for processing at its £3 million Luton mixed materials recycling facility (MRF), which has the capacity to process 100,000 tonnes of waste per year. The MRF uses a ‘semi-automated system’ to recover “at least” 60% of all waste collected.
According to Canary Wharf Managemant Ltd, which manages the central London estate on behalf of Canary Wharf Group Plc, around 70% of waste collected from the estate in 2014 was recycled, composted or sent for energy generation through anaerobic digestion (AD).
The remaining 30% of the waste was sent to Cory Environmental’s Belvedere energy-from-waste (EfW) facility in Bexley, which has the capacity to treat up to 670,000 tonnes of waste each year.
Canary Wharf Management Ltd’s estate has a working population of 105,000 in 34 office buildings and more than 300 shops, cafes, bars and restaurants.
Cawleys will take over the work from previous contractor Bywaters.
