The Lancashire local authority halted its trial with the recycler after a BBC documentary questioned the scheme’s efficiency (see letsrecycle.com story).
The restarted trial will see residents drop off their bagged and labelled hard-to-recycle items at the local household waste and recycling centre for the next six months.

Tony Watson, head of environment at Blackburn with Darwen borough council, said: “We are delighted to be continuing our trial with Terracycle, after a short pause to review recycling processes and discuss with local partners. As with any of our waste and recycling services, we will continue to ensure that this trial meets our high standards.
“It is a key priority for us to encourage our residents to actively engage with new and efficient ways to recycle, and by partnering with Terracycle we are offering them another opportunity to do this.”
He concluded that the council will listen carefully to any feedback from residents and will review it closely at the end of the six-month trial.
‘Delighted’
When Blackburn initially halted the trial, there were fears this could spread to other councils.
However, Ealing, which had also recently launched a trial, told letsrecycle.com it was planning to continue it. No others were believed to have stopped.
Stephen Clarke, head of communications at Terracycle, said: “TerraCycle is delighted that the Blackburn with Darwen council trial is back live. All our existing recycling solutions are designed to make recycling hard-to-recycle waste straightforward and accessible for everyone.
“We hope this trial with Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council will take these principles a step further by establishing a centralised and already well-used location for residents to drop off multiple waste streams to be recycled via TerraCycle. We are excited to see how much of these new types of waste local residents will recycle via the HWRC sites.”
