The deal, which will run for an initial seven years with the option of a further three, was inherited by Biffa when it acquired Viridor’s recycling assets in 2021 (see letsrecycle.com story).
The company has clearly done enough in that time for the council to award it the contract, beating one other bidder. The new deal will take effect from 1 April 2024.
The sites that shall be included in this procurement are located at Larkhall, Strathaven, East Kilbride, Blantyre and Rutherglen (pictured below), the tender notice outlines.
In the notice, South Lanarkshire said it may also include the management and operation of a site in Carluke which the council owns.

Contract
The contract is for the treatment, disposal and recycling arrangements including end destination details for all the waste and recycling materials collected at the sites.
The tender process ran between 13 July and 14 August 2023.
Value
The estimated total value of the contract is £3.5 million per annum and is based on the current frequency of waste and recyclate material collected via the sites excluding Carluke, at current 2022/23 rates excluding VAT.
South Lanarkshire serves around 320,000 residents. It is is one of 32 unitary authorities of Scotland and borders the south-east of the Glasgow city council area and contains some of Greater Glasgow’s suburban towns, as well as many rural towns and villages.
