Supporting the Odeon contract, an on-screen advert will be screened nationally ahead of film showingsasking the audience to use the bins which are being supplied in record numbers by Biffa.
The company said that the order for 312 twin sets is its largest yet and it will work with ODEON to implement the new recycling system with the aim of achieving over double their current recycling figure by the end of 2014.
The company expects that up to 20% of the additional waste recycled will be captured through the new big red bins which can take all types of dry mixed recycling.
Responsibility
Commenting on the Odeon work, Daren King, Biffa industrial and commercial sales director, said: It is very encouraging to see more businesses like the ODEON Cinema group and Biffa working in partnership and is a clear demonstration of the importance that both industries place upon environmental responsibility.
It also makes very good business sense for ODEON Cinemas: Biffas big red bin service is an easy way for the business to fix recycling and waste management costs. Coupled with the increasing costs of landfill tax, integrated contracts such as this have become the most economical way for businesses of all sizes to manage their recycling.
The on-screen promotion is sponsored by Britvic brands Pepsi Max and Drench Water.
Colette Millican, Odeon Cinema Group procurement manager, said: The big red bin service is an excellent way to manage the Groups recycling as it is cost-effective and easy to use. We are delighted to be able to provide a recycling option in guest areas at all of our cinemas across the UK.
Once collected, the mixed recycling is sorted and segregated at one of Biffas state of the art material recycling facilities based at Trafford Park, Manchester, Aldridge in the West Midlands, and Edmonton, London.
Hospitality agreement
On the hospitality front, Biffa today announced that it had joined 110 leading UK hotels, pubs, restaurants, quick service restaurants, contract caterers, industry bodies and government departments by becoming one of the first waste management firms to sign up to support WRAPs Hospitality and Food Service Agreement.
The sector wide UK voluntary agreement which was launched by WRAP, on behalf of UK, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland governments in June, aims to cut food and associated packaging waste by 5% (a CO2e reduction of 234,000 tonnes), the equivalent of approximately 100 million meals. It also aims to increase the overall rate of food and packaging waste that is being recycled, sent to AD or composted to 70% (a CO2e reduction of 336,000 tonnes).
Biffa joins De Vere Group, Marstons, ISS, Mitie and QHotels, Compass Group, Greggs, Sodexo and Adnams Brewery among major players signed up from across the UK.
Julia Turnbull who will be leading for Biffa in working with customers to support this initiative said: the strength of the Agreement is that it brings the whole chain together. By bringing the chain together to identify the solutions and deliver change further and faster; we can use our industry knowledge to help make this happen and help our customers deliver their commitments to the Agreement.
We plan to actively participate within the working groups, using our knowledge and understanding of waste management to find the right solutions, Ms Turnbull added.
Delighted
Liz Goodwin, WRAP chief executive, said: We are delighted that Biffa has signed up to be a supporter of the Hospitality and Food Service Agreement. One of the big challenges the Hospitality and Food Service sector currently faces, as identified by WRAPs research, is tackling the vast amount of food and packaging waste it produces and currently disposes of to landfill each year. The joint agreement between WRAP, all four UK governments and industry will tackle this issue, and by working together we can reduce the environmental impact from waste produced by the Hospitality and Food Service sector, whilst reaping the financial benefits.
