Anglesey renews Verdant contract for 14 years

Anglesey county council has awarded a 14-year refuse and recycling collection contract to incumbent waste management firm Verdant.

Starting from April 1 2007, the contract will see the Kent-based company introduce alternate weekly collections of refuse and recycling over the next two years.

” We feel this reflects the good relationship we have had with the council for a number of years “
– Simon Miles, Verdant managing director

Verdant will extend its current collections of recyclables from 26,000 households to cover the whole island. It also plans to strengthen its management team and invest in a new fleet of waste and recycling collection vehicles.

The deal is the second which Verdant has agreed in 2007, after announcing that it was preferred bidder for a five-year, 30 million waste collection deal for the London Borough of Waltham Forest. (see letsrecycle.com story)

Simon Miles, Verdant managing director, said: “Naturally, we are all delighted to have been awarded this new contract after a competitive tender process, and feel this reflects both the good relationship we have had with the council for a number of years, and its conviction that Verdant can rise to the challenge of delivering improved services for the island's residents.”

Partnership

In Anglesey, Verdant has worked in partnership with the county council, community enterprise agency Menter Mon and local authority waste disposal company Cwmni Gwastraff Mon Arfon Cyf to deliver schemes such as fortnightly green waste collections to 6,000 properties.

The consortium has also introduced weekly kerbside collections of twin recycling boxes from 8,000 households, which helped boost the county's recycling rate to 23% by the end of 2006.

Meirion Edwards, principal waste management officer for the Isle of Anglesey county council, said: “We all face major challenges in the future with regard to managing our waste, meeting targets and improving the quality of service delivery. This new contract allows for these key challenges to be met, and we look forward to developing our relationship further with Verdant over the coming years to ensure continuous improvement in service delivery.”
