Veolia hails ‘tangible impact’ of safety equipment

VIDEO REPORT: Veolia says two pieces of health and safety equipment it rolled out earlier this year have already had a “tangible impact” on reported incidents.

In March, Veolia began rolling out reverse cameras on all its refuse collection vehicles (RCVs) and introduced new footwear for crews.
Letsrecycle.com visited Veolia’s Northamptonshire depot to take a closer look.

The French waste management company says the boots allow good movement in the ankle and foot, which “reduces stress on the joints when stepping forwards out of a cab”.

The roll-out came after a pilot in Northampton, where the two initiatives were launched.

Impact

Richard Hulland, chief risk and assurance officer at Veolia, explained that the introduction of the safety equipment had already had an impact on incidents and sickness rates.

He added that the equipment’s introduction formed part of a package of measures Veolia had rolled out to improve health and safety in recent months, including lower cab heights and increased ventilation in RCVs.
