Veolia opens SRF facility in Hampshire

Veolia Environmental Services opened its first UK solid recovered fuel (SRF) facility in Fareham yesterday (November 20) as part of its work to help Hampshire local authorities achieve a 94% landfill diversion of municipal household waste.

The plant, which is located at Warren Farm, Fareham can handle up to 50,000 tonnes of waste every year. The facility will process bulky waste from Hampshires household waste and recycling centres (HWRCs) which is currently sent to landfill as well as some commercial waste as part of a two year trial.

Waste entering the facility will be shredded and any metals will be extracted for recycling. The waste will then be shredded again. A combination of mechanical equipment, provided by Machinex, including a trommel, belt magnet, air separator and optical sort is then used to recover other materials for recycling. The remaining SRF will then be sent for energy recovery by a third party.

Richard Kirkman, head of technology for Veolia ES, said the firm is looking to reproduce the facility in other parts of the country made possible by its modular design. He added that Veolia ES chose bulky waste as a feedstock because of its high calorific value making it perfect for SRF outlets.

Diversion

Veolia ES said it aims to help Hampshire, through the Project Integra partnership, divert an additional 4% of waste from landfill through recovery and recycling, bringing the countys total landfill diversion rate to 94%. The countys collective recycling rate in 2011/12 reached 37%, with 53% of waste sent for energy recovery.

Estelle Brachlianoff, chief executive for Veolia ES (UK), said Diverting waste away from landfill helps to make vital savings for councils across the country and Hampshire is leading the way. This new facility at Warren Farm shows that Veolia is innovating for the environment’s benefit. At the moment this is a trial but we believe this will help lead Hampshire closer to zero waste to landfill.”
