New recycling centre opened on Merseyside

The Merseyside Waste Disposal Authority has opened a new recycling and waste transfer station in the Wirral.

The multi-million pound site in Bidston was redeveloped to increase the recycling facilities in the region as part of the Merseyside Waste Disposal Authority's strategy to maximise recycling and reduce the 700,000 tonnes of waste Merseyside residents send to landfill each year.

” This new facility updates our previous centre and provides state-of-the-art facilities for people in Wirral to use “
– Carl Beer, MWDA

The site will be operated by MWDA's contractor Mersey Waste Holdings Ltd, which is working with MWDA and Wirral council in order to increase recycling in the area.

Materials that can be brought to the site include car batteries, cardboard, engine oil, garden waste, paper, furniture, rubble, scrap metal, textiles, drinks, cans, timber, glass, soils, fridges and freezers. It is estimated that 70% of the material brought to the site will be recycled.

The new park has also been equipped to safely handle and dispose of asbestos for Wirral residents who make an appointment with MWDA.

Carl Beer, director of MWDA, said: “We are increasing our investment in new facilities as recycling is already increasing in Merseyside and we need to harness this and encourage a step change in behaviour

“This new facility updates our previous centre and provides state-of-the-art facilities for people in Wirral to use to drop off a variety of products they might previously have popped into the bin,” he added.
