In preparation for the national reforms, the council is seeking to fill 60 loader positions and 10 driver chargehand roles.
The local authority said that the additional staff will help it to manage new weekly food waste collections and expanded recycling services, in line with national legislation requiring all councils to collect core recyclable waste streams from every household.
Councillor Charles Quinn, portfolio holder for environment at Hull City Council, said: “Simpler Recycling marks a significant step forward in how we manage waste across the city.
“By recruiting and training new staff now, we’re ensuring Hull is ready to meet these new standards.”
Recruitment drive event
To support the drive, Hull City Council is hosting a dedicated Recruitment Event on Saturday 4 October 2025.
The event – run in partnership with the council’s Employment Hub – will take place at Staveley House, Stockholm Road, from 10:00 to 13:00 BST.
Attendees will be able to meet existing members of the waste and recycling team, view the vehicles used in daily operations and learn more about the roles on offer.
Quinn added: “I encourage anyone interested to come along and find out more about joining our dedicated waste team.”
Simpler Recycling
The new positions are being created in preparation for Simpler Recycling legislation designed to standardise household collections across England from April 2026.
Under the new system, all local authorities will have to provide containers for the separate collection of dry mixed recycling, food waste and residual waste – with the option to separate out paper and card.
The legislation came into force in March 2025, requiring businesses with over ten full-time employees to separate these materials.
Kerbside plastic film collections from workplaces and households will be introduced by 31 March 2027.
