Yorwaste reveals ambitions for Yorkshire waste contracts

Waste management company Yorwaste has said it is entering into “one of the most important years in its 12-year history”, as it seeks to renew recycling contracts with councils in Yorkshire.

The Northallerton-based firm has tendered with both North Yorkshire county council and the City of York council to manage civic amenity (CA) sites as well as transporting and arranging for the recycling of materials collected.

Yorwaste is currently preparing a bid for North Yorkshire county council, which is seeking to operate and maintain 21 of its household waste recycling centres. The incumbent operator, Yorwaste currently runs 20 of North Yorkshire's sites. The new two-year contract – with options for an additional two years – would also involve making improvements across the county.

Yorwaste is hoping to be part of the 10-year North Yorkshire county council disposal and composting contract (see letsrecycle.com story), and is also seeking a one-year fridge recycling contract.

City of York council is looking to secure a 10-year contract looking after three household waste recycling centres at Foss Islands, Towthorpe and Beckfield Lane. Yorwaste currently runs these sites, but under the terms of the new contract it would have to make improvements including the introduction of new recycling centres.

Crucial

Steve Grieve, Yorwaste managing director, said: “It is safe to say that we are entering a very important phase of the company's development and these contracts will play a crucial part of this development.

“These councils are two of our main customers and as well as ensuring there is a certainty for waste disposal. We want to continue working with the authorities to improve recycling performance in the area and we recognise the need for investment to assist in meeting the demanding targets that have been set.

“We hope that our track record, expertise, facilities, local knowledge and desire to succeed will stand us in good stead when these decisions are made,” Mr Grieve added.
