The new service at Leeds Metropolitan University and the University of Bradford sees a standard per-bin lift price to empty bins around the universities' campuses. However, beyond this payment billing will be arranged on a per-tonne basis.

Bins on campus will be fitted with microchips in order to record time of collection, location and weight. These chips will be read automatically by trade refuse vehicles fitted with onboard weighing systems. The bins will be designated for glass, paper, plastics or general waste in order to increase recycling.
A statement from Shanks said: “Shanks is confident that the contract will represent significant financial savings for the University Purchasing Teams but, perhaps more importantly, a major environmental improvement for the universities.”
Regular reports will be provided for the universities, showing the weight of a bin in a certain location around LMU's city centre campus as well as at Beckett Park and Bradford and Harrogate.
