Wastewise will supply more than 40,000 tonnes per annum of its BSI PAS 100 certified compost to Vital Earth Sales.
The waste management company operates three composting facilities across the north of England, processing more than 200,000 tonnes per annum of organic waste, including food and garden waste. Representing approximately 80% of their total annual tonnage, the 40,000 tonnes of compost will be supplied from a combination of all three sites.
Bob Wilkes, operations director at Wastewise, said: “At Wastewise we promote the use of sustainable waste treatment methods to help achieve zero waste to landfill.
“Composting is nature’s way of recycling organic waste, being an environmentally responsible and cost-effective method.
“We are delighted that this new contract with Vital Earth Sales Ltd represents a further step in ensuring that nothing we recycle goes to waste.”
Compost
At the end of its ‘closed loop’ composting process, Wastewise screens the finished product into different grades depending on the end market.
“This agreement allows us to manufacturer the best peat-free topsoil in the market”
Vital Earth Sales says it has run market testing involving extensive mixing trials in an attempt to find the “right product blends” since the summer of 2019. The finished product, under the brand name SupaGrow, is available in large bulk bags and 20L sealed bags nationwide in builders’ merchants, garden centres and retail outlets.
Sam Robinson, managing director of Vital Earth Sales, said: “Although we are experts in producing topsoil’s and soil improvers, this agreement allows us to manufacturer the best peat-free topsoil in the market.
“Working with Wastewise provides the assurance that our compost supply chain will remain not only constant but of a consistently high standard for a number of years to come, ensuring certainty of supply for our customers.”
Operations

In August, Wastewise entered into an agreement with Yorkshire Water for the operation of an open windrow composting facility at the latter’s Esholt wastewater treatment site near Bradford (see letsrecycle.com story).
And, the company announced in May that its new IVC facility near Crewe had become operational (see letsrecycle.com story).
