Waste PVC cable covers are “greenest” on market

Plastic covers for wiring, made from 100% recycled PVC-U, have been described by manufacturers as the “greenest” cable management products on the market.

MK Electric has said its cable covers, made from PVC used in doors and windows, offer “the most recycled content of any comparable ones on the market” but that the construction industry should do more to make sure waste material are put to good use.

And the cable management company has also said its overall product range, including skirting and trunking components, contains 90% recycled material.

Plastics recycler the PVC Group supplies MK Electric with the 100% recycled plastic, and sources this from fabricators across the UK and Ireland.

MK Electric managing director Mike Southgate said that using recycled PVC-U diverts 12,000 tonnes of the material from landfill every year and reduces carbon emissions.

He also said that MK Electric products are manufactured to the same quality standards as virgin polymers and that manufacturers have a responsibility to make more efficient use of materials.

He added: “There is a marked change in emphasis on sustainability issues. Initiatives such as the Code for Sustainable Homes, the 2012 Olympic Construction Commitments and the Government's Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP) have put sustainability to the top of the agenda for the construction industry.

“Our cable management products show that we have taken the issue seriously for some time now,” he said.

Recovinyl

Recovinyl is an organisation providing financial incentives to help boost PVC waste collection and is sponsored by the European initiative Vinyl 2010, which aims to increase PVC recycling across Europe.

Roger Morton, of Axion Recycling, Recovinyl's UK agents, said the group was working with MK Electric and similar manufacturers, who wanted to include PVC in their products.

He said: “Recovinyl is also discussing the use of recycled content with other leading manufacturers, in the DIY and computer sectors for example.

“Advanced recycling techniques are providing high quality PVC and other plastic recyclate that can successfully be re-used in a variety of new products. This environmentally-friendly approach is something that consumers are increasingly embracing.”
