Viridor and Veolia unveil initiatives ahead of World Earth day

Both Viridor and Veolia have made separate announcements today to mark ‘World Earth Day’ taking place this weekend (22 April).

Earth Day is an annual event on April 22 to demonstrate support for environmental protection, first held in 1970

Viridor has renewed its “strategic partnership” with the Reuse Network charity which will see the energy from waste specialist provide funding, resources, and expertise.

Meanwhile, Veolia has said it Sustainability Fund worth £100,000 will open on Friday, 21 April, to mark the day. Veolia said It is looking to fund projects that make a positive, sustainable difference to local areas and deliver long-term social and environmental benefits.

Both companies today said they were launching the scheme in time for World Earth Day.

Reuse

Viridor said the continued partnership with the Reuse Network charity first signed in 2022, demonstrates its “commitment to environmental sustainability and its dedication to supporting initiatives that reduce waste and promote circular economy principles”.

Carbon emissions

The Reuse Network supports a network of charitable organisations across the country who are each dedicated to reuse. Each year the network diverts millions of household items from landfill, helping to reduce carbon emissions and assisting low-income households by giving them access to affordable goods.

Their expertise and resources have helped us make a meaningful impact in reducing waste and supporting communities in need. Fund

Veolia’s Sustainability Fund is open to not-for-profit organisations, community groups or individuals in areas where the company partners with the local authority to deliver waste and cleansing services for the community.

All applications will be considered, Veolia said, but projects should aim to fulfil at least one of the following criteria; enhancing biodiversity, promoting sustainable behaviours (reduce, reuse and/or recycle), protecting or preserving resources and the environment and using recycled, reused or reclaimed materials.

Pascal Hauret, managing director of Veolia’s Municipal division, a said: “The Sustainability Fund was one of our greatest successes of 2022 and we’re so thrilled to see it growing again, with more local authority partners on board and an even bigger funding pot. As we work towards ecological transformation in collaboration with the communities we work with every day, we can’t wait to see the inspiring and innovative ideas they come up with in 2023.”
