Verdant takes two more council contracts

Two local authority waste management contracts worth a total of over 33 million have been awarded to Verdant.

The company announced yesterday that it was successful in bidding for a 27 million waste and recycling collection and street cleansing contract with Mid Bedfordshire council, as well as a 6 million contract to manage four civic amenity sites for Bridgend council in Wales.

The announcement comes in the same month that Kent-based Verdant won a 20 million waste and recycling contract with Chiltern district council (see letsrecycle.com story).

Roger Edwards, Verdant's business development director, said that local authority contracts are now a focus for the company.

He said: “We have a number of other tenders in the pipeline and are confident more local authorities will like our approach which is based on service, value, professionalism and accountability.”

Mid Beds
Mid Bedfordshire district council's 12-year contract with Verdant will see the company operating refuse, kerbside recycling, clinical waste and bring site collections as well as street and public convenience cleansing.

Verdant will take over these services from DSD and Cleanaway in early October this year. Gary Alderson, head of environmental services at Mid Beds council, said: “We're delighted to welcome Verdant which successfully won a tough tender process that evaluated price, methodology, quality and environmental management systems.”

Bridgend
Verdant's five year contract with Bridgend county borough council starts next month and involves the operation of three new and one existing civic amenity sites.

The council received funding from the Welsh Assembly for the construction of the new sites at Heol Ty Gwyn, Penllwyngwent and Brynmenyn. The sites have live webcam images on the council's website so residents can judge the best time to go.

Huw Jenkins, chief assistant of technical services at Bridgend, said: “We hope the new facilities will help the council achieve the challenging recycling targets set by the Welsh Assembly.”

Verdant said it would focus on increasing public use of the recycling sites through communication and education.
