Veolia retains Medway recycling deal

Veolia has retained its recycling haulage and processing contract with Medway council after winning a two-year extension worth £2.7 million.

Dry recycling will be processed at Veolia's Southwark MRF under the contract

The extension was effective as of 1 October and sees Veolia bulk and haul the Kent council’s dry mixed recycling at its Rochester waste transfer station.

Veolia then takes the material to the Southwark integrated waste management facility for sorting and onwards sale.

Veolia estimates that the contract will involved around 15,000 tonnes of material a year.

David Fitzgerald, general manager for Veolia South East, said: “We’re delighted to have won this contract, which reflects the existing high standards provided by our team.

“We’re very proud of our bulking, haulage and processing work for Medway that helps towards achieving our wider goal of ecological transformation. By ensuring that sorted recycling goes to the right place we are reducing both carbon and environmental impacts.

“The contract also demonstrates our strong relationship with Medway Council, and we look forward to continuing to work in partnership for the years to come.”

Partnership

Medway council and Veolia have worked together since 2006 when Veolia acquired Cleanaway Services, the company which held the waste collection contract at the time. In 2010, Veolia was awarded a £200 million extension to the collection contract (see letsrecycle.com story).

Veolia began processing recycling for the council in 2012, and has been awarded a number of extensions since then.

Ian Gilmore, Medway Council’s head of regulatory and environmental services, said: “I am pleased that we will be continuing to work with Veolia.

“We look forward to further developing our partnership to ensure our residents’ recycling is processed and recycled as efficiently as possible. Thank you to our residents for continuing to recycle.”

Medway council serves around 278,000 residents, and recorded a 41.8% recycling rate in 2020/21.
