Russell Richardson purchases shredder from MachTech

Mach Tech has secured an order for a Lindner Micromat 2000 shredder from Sheffield-based Russell Richardson for secure off-site document destruction.

The Lindner Micromat 2000 is powered by a 132kW drive and its 2025mm length rotor carries 104 x 40mm cutters offering a clean homogenous fraction.

The Micromat’s change screen offers a smaller shred size and higher level of security that conforms to any DIN standard, and minimises the chance of reconstructing the shredded document.

Russell Richardson’s managing director Jonathan Richardson said: “Mach Tech have always been so helpful, so when we were looking for a much bigger shredder it was only natural to contact Mach Tech as I knew they were already the market leaders in the RDF market, in total we looked at 5 supplier and got prices from 3 of them.”

He added: “In the end one of the key factors in our decision to purchase the Micromat was Mach Tech’s confidence in being able to offer a 100% guarantee over the throughput.”

The Mercedes-Benz Antos has been specifically developed for distribution work.

Phil Gudgeon, Cawleys head of waste collection, commented: “The new Mercedes-Benz Antos will provide us with a practical and purpose built Dustcart vehicle which features a fuel-saving, low-emission engine and enhanced safe, assured driving characteristics.

“This new vehicle will provide us with extra capability within our fleet ensuring our operating standards and requirements are not only met, but exceeded.”

Smith Brothers & Webb launches washing system

Smith Bros & Webb, provider of commercial vehicle and automated washing systems, has launched a new Chassis wash spray system.

Compliant with MOT standards, the new Chassis Master builds on Smith Brothers & Webb’s wash jet system.

The new model dispenses with the need for hot water or chemicals, providing greater cost efficiencies, the company claims. A typical wash cycle is 20 minutes; high energy cold water is directed on the chassis by a swinging arm and oscillating nozzle head.

The machine is microprocessor-controlled and features a twin shaft high pressure plunger pump (dual) operating at up to 45 bar pressure at the jets. The running frame has been constructed in hot dip galvanised steel and has been re-designed to drive without the use of cable drums or being pulled under its own services.

Andy Barracliffe, director of Smith Bros. & Webb, said: “We have listened to our customers and incorporated features in the new Chassis Master that we are confident will exceed all expectations.

“The fact that we have improved efficiency, lowered operating costs and reduced maintenance requirements while still offering exceptional wash performance makes it a compelling proposition.”

Welsh firm develops sterilisation wrap recycling process

Cardiff-based Thermal Compaction Group has developed a recycling process for healthcare providers to deal with sterilisation wrap, which is being trialled at one of Wales’ oldest hospitals.

‘Sterilisation wrap’ is used to package surgical instruments and equipment before they are subjected to a rigorous sterilisation process involving high-pressure steam. Every hospital performing surgery generates a significant amount of this kind of waste.

TCG has developed a ‘Sterimelt’ machine, which produces briquettes from the wrap’s base element, polypropylene, which it says can be manufactured into a variety of new domestic or industrial products, such as chairs and stationery.

St Woolos Hospital in Newport, part of the Aneurin Bevan University Health Board (ABUHB), has conducted a year-long trial involving sterilisation wrap.

“This is the first of its kind in the world”, said Tim Hourahine, technical and compliance manager of TCG. “The trial has shown that we can take the wrap as waste, reduce its volume substantially, render it inert and then re-introduce it to the supply chain.”

He added: “Currently, the majority of waste wrap is either landfilled or incinerated which is exceptionally expensive. The recycling process removes that cost, plus it produces a workable product which will have a commercial value in the future.”

Dunmow spreads charity message with vehicle livery

Chelmsford-based Dunmow Waste Management is using its flagship Volvo FH-540 vehicle to promote a charity raising awareness of the genetic disorder CDKL5.

The company has dedicated the livery on the nearside of the vehicle to the charity. The truck was supplied by Volvo Truck and Bus Centre London.

The Globetrotter-cabbed double-drive FH-540 tractor unit is used to haul the company’s Titan walking floor trailer for the transport of mixed recycling waste and black bag waste.

Managing director at Dunmow Waste Management, Sam Malins, said: “The CDKL5 UK charity is very close to our hearts as our daughter, Evie – also known as ‘Puds’ – was diagnosed with the condition by specialists at Great Ormond Street Hospital in May 2012 when she was just two years of age.”

Mr Malins added: “We’ve been involved with CureCDKL5 for two years now and carrying the charity’s artwork on our trucks is a very simple thing to do, but one that I hope will raise awareness right across Essex and into Hertfordshire.”

Dunmow Waste Management operates as a hazardous waste transfer station as well as a recycling centre for construction and demolition waste and household clearance waste. The company processes approximately 400 tonnes of material per day.
