The first contract is for the handling of recyclable materials collected from residents across Hull. This has been valued at is £12.5 million across the five-year extension.

The second contract is for the processing of kitchen and garden waste and was valued at £4.2 million. Within the contract the company states it manages around 20,000 tonnes of organic waste yearly through their in-vessel composting (IVC) facility, transforming it into compost suitable for agricultural and horticultural purposes.

Vikki Jackson-Smith, managing director of J&B Recycling said: “This extension of our contracts with Hull city council marks a significant milestone for J&B Recycling. Our collaborative efforts with Wastewise and the council have yielded remarkable results.

“We are thrilled to continue this journey, furthering our positive impact on environmental sustainability and community well-being. Our focus remains on innovating and improving our recycling processes, ensuring the highest standards of service for the residents of Hull.”

Bob Wilkes, managing director of Wastewise, added: “We are immensely proud to continue our partnership with Hull City Council alongside J&B Recycling. This contract extension is a testament to our joint commitment to sustainable waste management and our dedication to the community. Wastewise remains committed to delivering efficient, environmentally friendly waste processing solutions and we look forward to further enhancing our services and contributing to the region’s green initiatives.”

Contract

Since the initial contract was signed in 2015, Urbaser explained that J&B Bio has provided “uninterrupted and high-quality waste management services”. The collaboration has led to significant improvements in material quality, including better compaction levels, lower moisture content, and reduced contamination, the company said.

Urbaser, which was sold to US private equity firm Platinum Equity in 2021 (see letsrecycle.com story), has pursued a strategy in recent years to “expand its portfolio of waste treatment solutions” in the UK.

The company acquired Wastewise in 2022 and J&B recycling the year before (see letsrecycle.com story).
