Top award for Aylesford

Aylesford Newsprint has triumphed in this year's Institution of Mechanical Engineers manufacturing excellence awards, at its first time of entering.

The recycled newsprint company beat competition that included Land Rover and Vauxhall Motors to win the resource efficiency category.

The awards are given for excellence in manufacturing which has arisen from improvements in staff development and engineering processes.

Aylesford Chief Executive Alan McKendrick said: “Our receiving this award shows how a business that is founded upon sustainable production processes can succeed against the strongest competition.”

The company, a joint venture company between SCA Forest Products and Mondi Europe recycles 500,000 tonnes of used newspapers and magazines each year, and makes 400,000 tonnes of newsprint.

It said it had invested more than 250,000 of landfill tax payments in community, regeneration, nature conservation and educational schemes.
