SITA UK trials building waste recycling system in Dorset

Waste management firm SITA UK is carrying out trials to recycle building waste into secondary aggregates at a site in Dorset.

The trials, which started yesterday at the Beacon Hill landfill site, could ultimately lead to 60,000 tonnes of material being recycled each year. The company said it could help towards achieving the recycling targets set for Dorset county council.

Concrete and asphalt will be crushed using a new “state-of-the-art” mobile crusher, which the company says is self-contained with enclosed noise and dust suppression systems. The trial should see if the operation is likely to impact on local residents and the environment at large.

Representatives of the local community, the planning authority, the Environment Agency and English Nature were invited to see the start of the trial.

John Sinclair, SITA UK’s recycling development manager, explained: “It is essential for SITA UK as an environmentally responsible company to comply with landfill diversion targets and to recycle waste materials wherever possible.

“However, we recognise that local concerns are also our responsibility and hope that the visit by representatives of the community groups will help to reassure them that the operation can be undertaken successfully with minimal social and environmental impacts,” he added.
